Does anybody know the easiest way to remove wall paper?
I'm wanting to paint my boyfriends parents house for them, and earlier on today I went down to my local hardware store, Bunnings, and purchased some wall paper re-mover but it takes 10 whole minutes to work just to remove a bit of the stuff.
Does anyone know of any quicker way I can do this please, its really frustrating me and is the most annoying part of the job.
Is there any quicker way of doing it please???
the wall paper is very stubborn and has been on tose walls for over 30 years.
There is a tool you can buy which perforates the paper - puts heaps of pin pricks into it. This allows the moisture to penetrate the glue backing when you steam or sponge with water afterwards. I've never tried it, but i've heard that you need to go through this process if the paper is very thick, or if it is one of those vinyl types of papers. Putting steam or water on these papers will do nothing as it cannot penetrate.

Wall Paper Removal
There are two kinds of wallpapers: Strippable and unstrippable. As the name implies, strippable wallpaper is designed to be easier to remove by peeling it off the wall. To test which kind of wallpaper you have, peel back a corner of the paper and see if it begins to pull back from the wall. If you do have strippable wallpaper, removal is a simple matter of using a sponge soaked in hot water and detergent to loosen the glue. Use a putty knife or spatula to help lift any areas that remain stuck to the wall. After you have removed all of the wallpaper, thoroughly scrub the wall to get rid of any glue residue that may be left. Two cups of vinegar diluted in a gallon of hot water makes an excellent cleaning solution to lift off this sticky residue.
Unstrippable wallpaper removal will be a much more difficult and messy project. Prepare accordingly by covering all of your furniture and exposed carpeting with blankets or tarps. These types of wallpapers are designed with an outer layer of water repellent to make them more durable. Unfortunately, that means you have to scrape off the coating before you can work on loosening the glue underneath. There are specialized paper scoring tools made just for this purpose or you can just use a regular utility knife or razor blade. Be sure you do not gouge too deeply into the paper and break through all the way to your wall. If you do happen to poke a hole in the drywall, repair it with spackle before applying any wallpaper removal chemicals. You do not want the chemicals to burn through the dusty drywall material that is used for most residential walls.
Once you have scored the outer layer of the paper, you can use a wallpaper removal product to loosen up the glue. DIF is one of the best products on the market, but there are others you can choose from as well. Mix the product according to the manufacturer's instructions, then use a paint roller to apply it to the wallpaper. For larger jobs, a power sprayer may help you quickly cover more area. Let the product sit for 20-30 minutes so that it can work its way down into the glue. Starting at the bottom of the wall and working your way up, scrape off the wallpaper with a spatula or wide putty knife. If the wallpaper removal product has done its job, you should be able to easily peel off the paper in strips.
