How to explain to a 2 yr old that mommy is having a baby?

My son just turned 2 the end of Sept. and he really doesnt get it yet that mommy is having a baby. I am 17 weeks and showing a bit but not enough for Logan to really know theres anything different about mama. How did you explain it? What kinds of things did you have to do to prepare your toddler for a new baby?

Also, what do you think about changing bedrooms with toddlers? My son has had the same room since he was born....we took down the crib and set up his big boy room in there but still have all the baby decals etc on the walls, so we planned on giving Logan a new room, and giving the baby Logans old room. How did your tots deal with a move like this?

A 2 year old does not really have the reasoning skills yet to understand the concept of a new baby. That age thinks very concretely and if it can't be seen than it often just doesn't make sense. I'd talk about the baby, but I wouldn't go overboard about it. When your tummy gets bigger and the baby's movements begin to be felt by someone from the outside then you can place your son's little hand on there to feel his new baby brother or sister moving around. However, don't expect him to show much enthusiasm about it. He may, however, sense your excitement and offer the information to complete strangers that mom has a baby in her tummy. There isn't that much to explain. My second was born when my oldest was 2 years 4 months. We talked about the new baby, but she wasn't really grasping the concept. Our 3rd came along when our second was 3 years 2 months. We thought he had a good handle on the whole new baby thing until he met her for the first time. My husband brought the older 2 up to the hospital. We were taking pictures of them holding their new baby sister. When it was my son's turn, he sat with her on his little lap, looked at her and said, "Mom, who is this?" We nearly died laughing. Here we thought he got it and all along he really had no idea that those movements in my tummy would one day become this little baby. If you are going to change your toddler to another room I would do it as soon as possible so he doesn't equate the new baby coming with being displaced to another room. A lot depends on your son's personality. If change is exciting to him he may be all gung ho about a new room, but if he likes his space then moving to another room may be upsetting. Take your cues from how he did with the big boy bed. Did he do well with that transition? If so, then he may very well be fine with a new room. Of my 4 kids, 2 of them love to switch rooms while 2 like things to stay the same. You have enough time to help your son make a new room his own so that he won't be as prone to claim his old room as "mine" when he sees his new sibling in there. That is a 2 year old mentality, though, if it has ever been mine than it is still mine.
