Stripe Wall Pops
New apartment...painting my bedroom..help?
I just moved into a new apartment...the rest of my place I kept very modern and it has a very 'POP art' influence. So I want to continue the theme in my bedroom I was thinking horizontal black and white stripes on all but one wall.....HOW on earth do I do this?
tape measure, level, a pencil, and blue painters tape. measure thickness of stripes, use the level as a straight edge and mark with pencil. run the blue painters tape along the line drawn. make sure to press the tape down well on the side you are going to paint. you'll have to do one color at a time. let first color dry (cure) fully and remove tape.
put new tape to edge of first color making sure you get a good seal. paint second color. if you need more help with painting shoot me an e-mail.

Choosing the Right Drapes
So, you have a room to redecorate. The carpet is fine, the furniture will do and the wall hangings are just what you want. Something needs to be done with the paint and the drapes though.
This should be a breeze. Only a couple of choices at the local hardware store and a weekend of labor...no problem! Maybe. The labor is the easy part after you sort through reams of material to find just the right thing.
You should start by thinking about the type of drapes. Will they be first thing that people notice as they enter your newly decorated room, or do you want a more subtle approach as just an accent?
If you want the drapery to "pop" and be the focal point then go crazy with the designs or bold with the color selection. For a more subdued effect, tone it down enough to add compliment without overwhelming. Don't forget that you'll have rods and tracks to consider too.
Take a couple of photos from different angles to help in your selection and get an idea of how the new drapes will impact your furniture styles. Try not to fall in love with a paint or wallpaper until you have made your selection of drapery. Fabric patterns and colors are finite whereas paint is any color that you want it to be. Remember that there is a "rest of the home" that should be at least considered when you are putting this all together.
General considerations for combining curtains into your overall interior design
You should use dark, warm colors to make a room look smaller and more intimate.
Cool light color selections will make a room light, airy and larger.
A larger pattern will tend to make a space seem tighter and more enclosed especially if you have many drapes in the room.
Vertical striped fabric curtains will seem to add height to a room and horizontal striped curtains will make the room look appear wider but make the ceiling look lower.
If you want to take your parade down a safe street, and create a satisfying and pleasing curtain design, then choose a plain fabric, perhaps a tone or two lighter or darker than the wall color and it will work every time. You can always spruce it up with a more decorative curtain rod, tiebacks or hold backs!
Don't get too obsessed with everything matching. If everything is the same, the room can look downright generic and without personality, so don't just grab a book and pick out some pretty pictures. Fly your originality flag high! Pick your drapes, pick your colors and get to work.
