How give my room a coastal theme without making it flashy?
I want to use a coastal theme, but when I look on the websites that feature beach theme rooms I see Hawaiian stuff like leis, flower patterns, and murals. To me, this is way too flashy and focuses on culture rather than the coast itself.
I want a laid-back beach theme, that is subtle and not tacky or flashy. What are some things I can do for this?
Stick with muted colors like pale blue, seafoam green, linen, white, light nutreals. Fill glass vases, candy dishes, ashtrays with fun shells. Prints that look real...nothing cheesy. Black frames. Black and white prints look good. Group them. You could wrap end table legs with rope (yard sales finds). Use rope to hang gromet style curtains or if you buy curtains with two different colors(one on top and one on bottom)you could separate the colors with a strip of rope. A wicker chair or any wicker would look good. Matching candles and a picture book of the shore. A basket to hold throw pillows. They make lamps that are clear glass(the bases) and you can fill them. Pick one up and fill with sand or shells or both. Glue starfish to drawer fronts. have fun!

Fundamentals For Hiring A Muralist
Wall murals provide scenery to an otherwise plain-looking room without a view. They have become popular in recent years mostly due to home decorating television shows that have demonstrated how murals can liven up even the dullest rooms. Hiring the right muralist is important to achieve a beautiful mural. Painting a mural requires a certain artistic ability and skill for painting large pictures on various surfaces. Muralists sometimes specialize in a particular subject matter, and there are different types of muralists. Some muralists are better at creating landscapes while others may focus their expertise in painting animals and cartoons. Below are some tips on how to find the right muralist to paint your room or wall.
Know what you want. If you want your wall to be painted by a muralist, you probably have some idea what subject matter your want painted. Decide what kind of scene you want painted on your wall; this is important as some muralists have specific niches while others are generalists. Choosing a mural theme also depends a lot on what type of room you are placing the mural in, whether it is a nursery, the game room, the kitchen, the office, the den, or the living room. To give you an idea, below are some of the common and popular types of murals:

Search for potential muralists. Once you have an idea of what you want, it is time to search for the right muralist. Great sources of referrals of muralists that have the skills to craft the type of mural that you want include home improvement stores, museums, and the local cultural affairs office. Another great option is to search on the Internet for muralist in your community using online directories or by running a general search. It is oftentimes more handy to search on the World Wide Web to locate a good muralist as they might have their body of work posted there for you to browse to get an idea of their abilities. Form a list of a minimum of three mural artists with the skills that you admire.
Choose one based on the above factors and the way they accommodated you in your interview. After choosing and hiring the mural artist, don't overlook having a contract drawn up to protect your interests and those of the artist.
Once your mural is finished add other accents to the room that tie in with the subject matter of the mural: Hanging wall vases filled with blooms make a great accent to a garden theme mural and wall art can accent nearly any traditional, vintage, country or old world style.
