Easy Apartment Decorating Tips

When you live in an apartment or small condo, there are limitations. Since you’re only renting the property, there are certain things you’re not allowed to do. In most cases, you won’t be able to change the floors, put nail holes in the walls, or change the kitchen countertop. Yet this doesn’t mean you must be resigned to living in something that is less than appealing or drab.

In most cases, all the apartments in a building or complex look exactly the same. All will have boring white walls, neutral floor or carpeting, and bare windows. In the best-case scenario, you may end up with windows that have white mini-blinds. So how can you make your apartment original, adding in your own individual style? Here are some ideas to get you started.

Decorate Your Walls
Ask and see if it’s possible for you to paint. Many apartment managers actually allow painting, since they can easily paint over your color when you move out. If this is the case, then try painting one wall a bold, bright color to add visual impact. If you’re not allowed to paint, then go with a large and intricately patterned tapestry on the wall. You may also want to hang some bold colorful prints with a simple mat edge or without a frame at all.

Special hangers can be purchased for apartment walls. This allows you to hang things without putting holes or nails in the wall, which may not go over well with your manager.

Add Some Drama to the Floors
Although you may not be able to rip up the linoleum or carpet, you can always use colorful area rugs. Use brightly colored botanical patterns for the kitchen. With bright sunflowers, daisies, and poppies, you can add a cheerful look to the room, breaking up the monotony.

Consider a couple of smaller rugs in the living room or one large area rug, perhaps strategically placed in front of the sofa. Choose bold patterns for this room, keeping in mind your color scheme, of course. Intense stripes and plaids can really pick up a room, especially if you have solid-colored furniture.

Add Flair to the Windows
Although you may have to live with the mini-blinds, you can certainly add a little color! Sheer curtains are an option if they coordinate with your other décor. If you’re looking to create some drama, drape a boldly colored satin sheet above the window, allowing it to cascade down the sides and onto the floor.

Stick to Color, Pattern, and Texture
Color, pattern, and texture are essential for dramatically changing the look of a room. P aint, throw rugs, big fluffy throw pillows, and other decorating accessories can really liven up the décor. In fact, keep several big pillows on hand, as they provide instant floor seating when you have several guests coming to visit.

Keep Furniture to a Minimum
Furniture should be kept to a minimum in order to create a spacious feel. Low-profile furnishings that don’t have arms will contribute to the open feeling. Items such as coffee or end tables should be kept simple. Stay away from anything that’s too big or bulky.

Be sure to add in a few creative accents of your own to create an apartment that looks and feels like home. When it comes to creating appealing spaces, a little imagination can go a long way.
